Our Purpose

The purpose of Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum is to preserve U.S. military air history.

Our History

In 1981 a few people shared the desire to preserve the facts and glamour of southeastern Michigan's aviation history and laid the plans for an imaginative venture.

The idea caught fire - a spark fanned by the enthusiasm of others who shared this goal. From an historic hangar at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the idea grew. The 1941 hangar, which played a role in the production of nearly 8,700 B-24 'Liberator' bombers, became the focal point of the Yankee Air Force Aviation Museum. The museum includes flyable examples of historic aircraft as well as static displays and display rooms filled with historic artifacts.

The idea has spread to other locales. The Florida Division of Yankee Air Force Florida Division was founded in the year 2000 with a like purpose of helping to preserve military history and education of the public in Florida in this regard. In February 2007 the Division separated from Yankee Air Force to provide for more flexibility that would facilitate future growth.

Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum

The new organization Wings of Freedom Aviation Museum has opened a museum at the Dunnellon / Marion County Florida Air Port which will display items pertaining to past U.S. Military conflicts as well as having a library of pertinent materials. Dunnellon Air Port was chosen, in part, because it served as a military training base during World War II. Also, the surrounding counties are home to over 100,000 World War II Veterans. There will be displays in the museum pertaining specifically to Marion County and generally to the State of Florida.

The group holds monthly meetings with guest speakers covering various topics relating to military history, stories and veterans experiences. These speakers are video taped and these tapes will be added to our library.

We meet the 2nd Saturday of each month, except in November, at 1 p.m. at the Dunnellon Air Port and  welcome new members.

The airport is located between Ocala and Dunnellon, Florida on route 484 approximately 6 miles west of the State Road 200 intersection southwest of Ocala.
